The Revolution In Cell Phones Delayed

Apple announced the iPhone 3G yesterday and it looks like the days of being able to buy your phone at the Apple Store and going home to do the actual registration and setup are gone.

With iPhone 3g, you will have to do setup in the store. This is to help cut down on people buying the phone and using it with service providers other than AT&T.

Mobile phone service providers don't get it. They should just be selling the service. Let companies like Apple sell the hardware. My guess is that by cutting out having to maintain an inventory of cell phones, they can shave costs. Besides, it is then a clear distinction to the customer as to who provides support for what.

I should be able to walk into the Apple Store, buy the iPhone 3G, go to AT&T to start service and get the SIM card for the phone and then be done with it. I know who provides support for the phone and who provides support for the phone service.

WWDC 2008 Predictions

It's been a long time since I've blogged from here, too much experimenting with other blogging tools like Twitter, Wordpress, Facebook, etc.

It's WWDC time and here are my predictions of what will be announced from Apple:

Mac OS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard")
It will be announced but won't ship until next year. I agree with John Gruber, PowerPC support will be dropped. While that will tick off some people, and my G5 will be left out in the cold, it makes sense on so many levels.

iPhone 2.0
I don't know why people are referring to any new iPhone phone as the "iPhone 2.0" that version number has always been for the previously announced iPhone 2.0 software. I'm hoping for expanded Cisco VPN support so I can connect with the Penn State wireless network. I also predict that Adobe Flash will NOT be available on the iPhone. Hopefully the ringtone volume will be increased but I suspect that will only happen with new hardware. See below.

New iPhone Hardware
I am talking about the physical phone here. Not sure what it will be called but all the online references to "iPhone 2.0" is very confusing because the software update is 2.0. Maybe iPhone IIcx? My guess is that it will be slightly thicker to accomodate a bigger battery to accomodate 3G data. Improved speaker and vibrate.

Mac mini
While Steve Jobs may reportedly not be a fan of the Mac mini, there are enough of us out there who are and this is the one piece of hardware that really hasn't been updated in a very long while aside from speed increases. Not sure what we'll see but I'd really like to see Apple give this puppy some more love.
