According to New Media Age, Napster CEO Chris Gorog was quoted as saying, "...it's stupid to buy an iPod." That's because Napster thinks it can compete with Apple's iTunes Music Store using a format for its music files that is not compatible with the most popular digital music player in use by consumers at the moment, the iPod. He's telling 11 million iPod owners they are stupid. That's a fine way to convince them to pay attention to Napster. Apple currently has roughly 70% of the digital music player market.
Who's being stupid? The person who buys the iPod and uses the iTunes Music Store to buy new songs or the person who subscribes to Napster To Go, pays $15 a month for songs that cannot be (legally) burn the songs to CD or hang onto those songs when that person closes the account?
Maybe it's Napster that is stupid by not supporting a common file format like .mp3.
Traffic at Napster's website was up 30% after their Super Bowl ad ran. They spent $2.5 million for the ad. Apple spent zip for advertising during the Super Bowl. Their website traffic was up 170% after the Pepsi-iTunes ads appeared during the Super Bowl.
